Privacy Policy

Your Privacy Matters

At SIMT, we believe that your privacy is a fundamental right. This Privacy Policy describes the types of information we collect, how we use and protect that information, and the choices available to you. By using SIMT, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy.

Data Storage and Privacy

  • Local-First Architecture: SIMT is designed with a local-first approach. All application data — including saved targets and locations, custom notes and names, compass calibration data, app preferences, and navigation history — is stored exclusively on your device by default. We do not collect, transmit, or store any of this data on our servers or in the cloud unless you explicitly opt in to an optional feature described below.
  • Optional Cloud Backup (Google Drive): You may choose to sign in with Google to back up your SIMT data to your personal Google Drive. This feature is entirely optional. When enabled, SIMT requests restricted access only to a dedicated, app-specific folder within your Google Drive; it cannot access, read, or modify any of your other files. We do not process or store the contents of your Google Drive on our servers. We store only your basic Google authentication identifier to manage your sign-in session, prevent duplicate accounts, and provide a seamless experience.
  • User Profile: When you use certain online features (such as Link+), a minimal profile is created on our servers containing your user identifier, display name, and a timestamp of your last sign-in. This profile does not contain your location, targets, or any personal navigation data. Profile records are automatically deleted after three (3) months of inactivity.
  • Data Deletion: You may delete locally stored SIMT data at any time by opening the Menu, selecting Data Management, and using the Clean Up Data control. Follow the on-screen prompts and proceed only when you are certain you wish to erase your app data. Uninstalling the app will also remove all locally stored data.

Location Data

SIMT requires access to your device's location services to deliver its core compass and navigation functionality. We treat your location data with the highest level of care.

  • On-Device Processing: Your location data is processed entirely on your device for compass bearings, distance calculations, and map display. It is never transmitted to our servers for these core features.
  • No Silent Background Tracking: SIMT reads your location only while you are actively using the app, or while a session you have explicitly started — such as live tracking or an armed Automation — is running with a visible notification. SIMT never tracks your location silently in the background.
  • Link+ Location Sharing (Optional): The Link+ feature allows you to voluntarily share your location with people you choose. You initiate every sharing session yourself; SIMT never shares your location automatically. Link+ operates in two modes: (a) over a local Wi-Fi network with encryption, or (b) online with end-to-end encryption through our secure servers. In both modes, only the people you explicitly invite to a session can see your location. Online sessions are stored temporarily and are automatically deleted after seven (7) days of inactivity. Your location is sent only when you actively trigger it; it is never transmitted in the background.
  • Sharing via QR Code or Share Button: You may choose to share a target's coordinates using the in-app QR Code or Share button. This action is entirely manual and intentional; SIMT never shares location data on your behalf without your explicit action.

You can revoke location permissions at any time through your device settings.

Camera and Augmented Reality

Certain optional features — including Track+ (movement tracking), Iris (AR compass overlay), and Ray+ (AR measurement) — require camera access through Google ARCore. Camera data is processed entirely on your device in real time for motion estimation and augmented-reality rendering. No images, video frames, or camera data are ever recorded, stored, or transmitted to any server.

Device Sensors

SIMT uses your device's built-in sensors — including the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and step detector — to provide compass headings, movement tracking, and pedestrian dead reckoning. If you arm an Automation, SIMT also uses Android's activity recognition (for example, detecting that you have finished driving) to fire the trigger you configured. All sensor and activity data is processed locally on your device in real time and is never transmitted, stored, or shared.

Crash Reporting and Diagnostics

SIMT uses Firebase Crashlytics to collect anonymous crash reports and diagnostic data when the app encounters an error. This data includes technical information such as device model, operating system version, stack traces, and app state at the time of the crash. It does not include any personally identifiable information such as your name, email address, location, targets, or navigation history. This diagnostic data is used solely to identify and fix bugs, improve app stability, and enhance performance. It is never used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than maintaining and improving the app.

No Sale or Unauthorized Sharing of Data

We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise disclose your personal data to third parties for their commercial purposes. Specifically, SIMT does not:

  • Sell or rent your data to advertisers or data brokers
  • Share your data with third parties for marketing or profiling
  • Use your data to build advertising profiles
  • Collect personal information without your informed consent

Your privacy is protected by design.

Share Links

When you share a target or location as a link or QR code (goto.simt.app), the shared coordinates are encoded directly into the link itself — they are not uploaded to or stored on our servers. Opening the link simply decodes it on the recipient's device. Encrypted share links go one step further: their content can only be read by someone who has the complete link. Treat a share link like the information it contains — anyone who receives it can read it.

Third-Party Services

SIMT integrates the following third-party services, each of which operates under its own privacy policy:

  • Firebase Authentication: Provides anonymous and Google sign-in. Processes only the minimum credentials needed for authentication.
  • Firebase Crashlytics: Collects anonymous crash reports as described in the Crash Reporting and Diagnostics section above.
  • Google Play Services: Provides location services, activity recognition, ARCore, and in-app billing infrastructure. Operates under Google's Privacy Policy.
  • Google AdMob: When you voluntarily choose to watch a rewarded advertisement, AdMob may process certain data in accordance with Google's advertising policies. Ad viewing is always optional and initiated solely by you.
  • MapLibre GL / Google Maps: Used for map rendering. Map tile requests are made directly between your device and the tile provider; we do not intermediate or log these requests.
  • Open-Meteo: Provides the optional weather display. Your approximate coordinates are used to fetch local weather conditions; requests carry no account identifiers. Online weather can be disabled in Settings.
  • Google Geocoding: Optionally converts coordinates into a readable place name (city and country). When disabled, SIMT uses its built-in offline geocoding instead.
  • Public Astronomy and Satellite Data: Orbital and celestial targets rely on publicly available scientific data feeds. These downloads contain no personal information whatsoever.

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these third-party providers.

Wear OS Companion App

SIMT offers an optional companion app for Wear OS smartwatches. The watch app syncs target data from your phone over the secure Wearable Data Layer API. The watch may use its own location sensors and compass to provide on-wrist navigation. All data exchanged between the phone and watch remains private to your devices and is not transmitted to any external server.

Voluntary Support

You may voluntarily support the continued development of SIMT in two optional ways: (a) by making a one-time donation through an in-app purchase processed by Google Play, or (b) by watching a rewarded advertisement served by Google AdMob. Both options are entirely optional and do not affect your access to any feature. When you watch an ad, the advertising network may process certain data in accordance with its own privacy policy. When you make a purchase, the transaction is handled exclusively by Google Play under its terms of service. We do not collect or retain any payment card or financial information.

Our Website

The simt.app website uses Google tags (such as Google Ads conversion measurement) to understand how visitors discover SIMT and how our campaigns perform. These tools may set cookies or use similar identifiers in your browser and are governed by Google's privacy policy. They relate to the website only — they have no access to anything inside the app. You can manage cookies in your browser settings and opt out of personalized advertising through Google's Ads Settings.

How We Protect Your Data

Our strongest safeguard is architectural: the most sensitive data — your location and saved places — never leaves your device for core features, so there is simply no central database of your movements to breach. Where online features are involved, connections are encrypted in transit, online Link+ sessions are end-to-end encrypted, and the few server-side records we keep are minimal and short-lived. No method of storage or transmission can be guaranteed 100% secure, but collecting almost nothing remains the best protection we can offer.

Data Retention

We retain data only for as long as necessary to provide our services:

  • Local app data: Retained on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
  • User profiles (server): Automatically deleted after three (3) months of inactivity.
  • Link+ sessions (server): Automatically deleted after seven (7) days of inactivity.
  • Crash reports: Retained by Firebase Crashlytics in accordance with Google's data retention policies.
  • Ad reward records (server): Retained as part of your profile and subject to the same three-month retention period.

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live — including under the EU/UK GDPR and similar laws such as the CCPA — you may have the right to access, correct, export, restrict, or delete your personal data, and to object to certain processing. Because SIMT keeps almost everything on your device, you can exercise most of these rights directly: review and edit your data in the app, export your own backups, and erase everything through Data Management or by uninstalling the app. For the minimal server-side data described in this policy (user profiles, Link+ sessions, and support records), simply contact us and we will fulfill your request within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Children's Privacy

SIMT is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the applicable minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe that a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will take steps to delete such information promptly.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of SIMT after any modification constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
